The Woolly from Wolston

Work Experience Students Jessi and Katie wrote this about their favorite item in the store:

Woolly Rhinoceros (Coelodonta antiquitatis) lived in the Pilocene and Pleistocene epochs (5.3 million to 11,700 years ago). They went extinct due to a warming climate at the end of an ice age. This is the ulna bone from an individual estimated to have lived between 12 thousand to 50 thousand years ago. The ulna was found in 1995 during a gravel quarry excavation at Wolston quarry. This was the only bone found from this Woolly Rhino.

A woolly rhino could run at a speed of 25 miles per hour and weighed 3.5 tonnes and stood 2 meters tall and 5 meters long. The Ulna is the largest of the two bones in the lower arm. This particular ulna is from the right side of the rhino.
